Who's on Your Team?

With football season in full swing and my fantasy team hurting, I'm constantly looking for the players that could make all the difference in my season. As I scrolled through the various options, carefully analyzing not only the individual player's stats but also his teammates stats, I began to realize how important the people in our lives are. Upon this realization I started thinking about the people on my "team." I started thinking about how important it is to have the right people in the right spots, some are started, others wait on the bench, and some just don't fit.

The Starters: The starters in our lives are the people who have a positive influence on us. These are the people who challenge us and force us to grow. They offer insight and wisdom about situations. I like to think of my starters as being able to fill certain positions in my life. I have a person who I go to when I need financial advice, there are people who I call or text to get a good dosage of motivation, and I have a person to talk to when I need to be given the "tough love."

It's with your starters that you want to invest the most time and energy. Really, why wouldn't you want to spend time with people who care about you, motivate you, and make you feel great?

The Bench: The people on my bench have much to offer as well, just not at the present moment. Similar to the players on your bench who you might sub in, these are the people who you still want want around just not all the time. Perhaps these people are on my bench because of certain life circumstances where they need to focus all their energies on the current issue, or some of these people have great attitudes but their lifestyle doesn't quite mesh with our core purpose. Still there are moments when the relationship can benefit both.

One last thought on your bench is to try and make it as awesome as you can. Unlike fantasy football, you don't have to settle and you can make your bench as deep as you want it. Just remember to fill it with the right people!

Not on the Roster: Then there are the people that just don't fit on the team. I know that it doesn't sound great saying that, but it is important to be conscious of who we surround ourselves with. These are the people who are chronically negative, instead of helping you become your best their focus is persuading you to settle.

Now I believe in showing love to everyone. I'm not advocating totally abandoning your friend who happens to complain a lot. I will however suggest managing your time in a way that the negative friend isn't allowed to sap your energy and your time.

Yourself: Now the big question is, which one of these are you? Are you someone's starter? Who's bench are sitting on and how can you move into a starting position? Is there someone's roster you're not on? Why?

It's always important for us to take a step back and evaluate who we are as we begin to evaluate who spend our time with. "You become who you surround yourself with. "Your friend are like elevators. They either pull you up or pull you down." -Marc Mero

Just like Harry, You Don't Have to Journey Alone

With the anticipation of the final Harry Potter movie coming out, I figured it would only be right that I took a second to relate Harry Potter to all of us. I'm proud to say that I've read all of the books multiple times, and the most obvious lesson to me throughout the whole series is the importance of allowing our friends to help us with our life journey. This couldn't be clearer than in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." By the way, have no fear, there are only a few small spoilers. We all have our life journey that we are meandering through. Some moments are all sunshine and rainbows, some are dull and uneventful, while others are full of trials which require friends to help us get through. As I was reading Deathly Hallows, I was struck by how Harry acts as he is carrying the locket. His best friends are there with him, yet he feels so lonely, mainly because of the power of the locket horcrux. Similarly, perhaps you can think of a time when it felt like...

Gam Zeh Ya'avor (This Too Shall Pass)

While at WASC Leadership Camp last week, I encountered ancient words of wisdom several times. Those ancient words were a simple phrase, "This Too Shall Pass." My curiosity was sparked, so I googled the phrase and found out that there is a very old story that goes with the phrase. After reading the story I felt like it was only right to share it with you all. This Too Shall Pass Once a king called upon all of his wise men and asked them, ”Is there a mantra or suggestion which works in every situation, in every circumstance, in every place and in every time. In every joy, every sorrow, every defeat and every victory? One answer for all questions? Something which can help me when none of you are available to advise me? Tell me is there any mantra?” All the wise men were puzzled by the King’s question. They thought and thought. After a lengthy discussion, an old man suggested something which appealled to all of them. They went to the king and gave him something written on p...

Build a Bridge

What am I doing? I'm building a door. It's a big door, stretching so high I can't reach the top. It will extend from way over there on that side all the way over there on the other side. You are probably wondering what kind of door I am buidling. It's not an ordinary door with a wood frame and a wooden sill, hinges, a door knob, and all the things that ordinary doors have. No, this door is no ordinary door at all. You see, my door is made out of brick, bricks that are heavy and firm and strong. I can visualize the bricks being black or blue. Each brick has holes in it. You know the kind we liked to stick our fingers in when we were kids. Normally these bricks are used with mortar filling in the holes to give the finished product extra strength. In my door I'm laying bricks on their side so that the holes provide little spaces to see through. When I'm finished my door will be permanent. There will be no door handle on either side. In order for my door to open, ...
